Lead author to the SCOPE Rapid Assessment Project on the Benefits of Soil Carbon


Niels H. Batjes is a Senior Researcher at ISRIC – World Soil Information. He has over 25 years experience in developing land resources information systems for national and international environmental assessment and decision support, mainly in the framework of international research and capacity building projects. After having worked in the Caribbean as a Soil Survey and Land Evaluation Expert for the Netherlands' Directorate-General for International Cooperation, he joined ISRIC in 1990. Niels’ special interest is soil data analysis in support of continental and global environmental assessments, in particular research on soil carbon stocks and changes. He is responsible for ISRIC's contribution to the GEF co-funded Carbon Benefits Project (CBP) and manages the widely-cited global WISE soil database. Niels also contributes to the development of ISRIC's Global Soil Information Facilities (GSIF), the FAO-led Harmonised World Soil Database (HWSD) and various other international projects. As Head of the World Data Center for Soils, he coordinated the transition and accreditation to the new ICSU World Data System (WDS). Niels is a member of the Editorial Board of Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment  and acts as a reviewer for various primary international Journals. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers, chapters in books, papers in proceedings, and technical reports.
