Biography

Primary Expertise: Soil Carbon Sequestration

Particular interest in the evaluation of the role of soils in forest and agricultural ecosystems in carbon sequestration focusing on soil carbon temporal and spatial dynamics and their integration at regional or national scale, mainly under tropical, subtropical and Mediterranean conditions. Scientific interests in the global change context with focus on (i) Data: their availability, organization and estimation of lacking data (pedotransfer functions), (ii) Spatialisation: based-map (SIG) and geostatistics approaches, (iii) Modelling: isotope-based (13C) modelling and mechanistic approaches, and (iv) integration of spatial and temporal dimensions.

Martial is a Senior Soil Scientist and currently Research Director at the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) a French Public Research Institute. Since 1999 he has been involved in the evaluation of the role of soils and agricultural systems in carbon sequestration focusing on soil carbon temporal and spatial dynamics and their integration at regional or national scale (mainly Brazil, French West Indies, Madagascar, Tunisia and Morocco). He has authored and co-authored about 200 research publications, including 75 papers indexed by the ISI Web of Science and 45 book chapters.

He is nominated scientific committee member of the program GESSOL (Gestion du patrimoine Sol, http://www.gessol.fr) of the French Ministry in charge of Ecology and Sustainable Development. Since 2011, nominated member of the French Scientific Committee on Desertification (CSFD, www.csf-desertification.org). He is also acting, since 2009, as an FAO consultant for the development and upgrading of the EX-Ante Carbon-balance tool (EX-ACT, www.fao.org/tc/exact/ex-act-home/en/) to provide ex-ante estimates of the mitigation impact of agriculture and forestry development projects for helping in the promotion of climate smart agriculture policies and projects.
