Prof. Michael Stocking

School of International Development, University of East Anglia, United Kingdom

Ex-officio member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the SCOPE Rapid Assessment Project on the Benefits of Soil Carbon

I specialise in the natural and social science aspects of soil conservation, agricultural biodiversity, land degradation and sustainable land management.  To coincide with my early retirement from the School in Summer 2008, the University awarded me 'Emeritus Professor' in recognition of 30 years teaching at UEA, including 6 years as Head of School. I continue until 2013 as a Professorial Fellow and tutor in the School, mainly supervising research students. I also work for the International Development Company (DEVCo) on a number of projects for various agencies, including the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility (Washington DC), the United Nations Development Programme (New York), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (Bonn) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (Bern).
My professional interests are in the conservation and management of renewable natural resources (such as soil, vegetation, water and land) in developing countries. Currently, I am assisting in developing a new strategy on 'land degradation' and 'sustainable land management' for the Global Environment Facility. Related projects include indicators and assessment techniques for land degradation, and developing a 'carbon tracking tool' for natural resource projects.
